In Part 1, a 9-milestone roadmap was laid out, and the posts since have built the foundation, momentum, and freedom required for this final stage. Now, we define what it's all for.
These last three numbers are the ultimate goals of the entire journey. They represent the point where a financial plan transforms into a life plan, funding a future designed around values, not just necessity.

Milestone #7: The "Key Bill" Passive Income Number
This first milestone isn't about covering all expenses, but one, very important one. It's the point where passive income from investments is enough to pay for a single, significant, recurring expense - like the monthly mortgage, rent, or childcare bill.
The Logic: The 4% Rule on a Micro Level. The simplified math is the same as the full FIRE calculation, just applied to a smaller, more manageable target. If the goal is to cover a $3,000 monthly mortgage ($36,000/year), the target investment portfolio for this milestone would be $0.9 million ($36,000 x 25).
The Psychology: The First Taste of True Freedom. Hitting this number is a profound psychological shift. A huge portion of the monthly financial pressure simply vanishes. Knowing that the roof over one's head is paid for by the portfolio, regardless of a paycheck, is an incredible feeling of security.
Milestone #8: The Financial Independence (FIRE) Number
This is the goal that makes work truly optional. While the "Relaxed Employment" number from Part 4 allows a person to stop saving for retirement, the FIRE number is the point where passive income can cover all lifestyle expenses.
The Logic: Covering an Entire Lifestyle. The simplified calculation uses the total annual spending for a desired lifestyle, multiplied by 25.
Desired Annual Spending | FIRE Number (Spending x 25) |
$80,000 | $2,000,000 |
$100,000 | $2,500,000 |
$120,000 | $3,000,000 |
The Psychology: Redefining Life's Purpose. This is the number that untethers life from the need to work for money. It doesn't necessarily mean a person stops working, but it means that any work they choose to do is based purely on passion and purpose, not a paycheck. This is the ultimate freedom to structure time: travel, learn, create, and contribute on one's own terms.
Milestone #9: The "Big Dream" Number
This final number is what separates a comfortable retirement from an extraordinary life. It's a dedicated fund for the big, soul-filling goals that go beyond day-to-day living.
The Logic: Funding What Matters Most. This isn't just an investment number; it's a goal for a specific, tangible dream. It could be a vacation home, the capital to start a non-profit, a scholarship fund for an alma mater, or the money for a round-the-world trip. It could also be a fund to pay for education for children and grandchildren, or even for another degree for oneself.
The Psychology: The Ultimate "Why”. This number is the answer to the question, "What is it all for?" While the FIRE number provides freedom from work, the “Big Dream” number provides the resources for a specific vision of a joyful and meaningful life. It’s the ultimate expression of financial freedom.
This nine-step roadmap isn't just about hitting numbers on a spreadsheet. It's a framework for building a life of intention, security, and freedom, one milestone at a time. The journey itself is where the real growth happens.
