AFC® Experience Hours: How to Earn the 1,000 Hours on Top of a Full-Time Job

Key points

  • The AFC® certification requires 1,000 experience hours in financial counseling, coaching, and education work, which includes teaching, developing educational content, training, webinars, coursework, reviews, and supervising.

  • Hours can count from 7 years before enrollment, and candidates have 3 years from enrollment to finish. They can be earned before or after the exam.

  • Each category has a maximum: 1,000 hours each for counseling, teaching, and supervising; 700 for educational content; 200 for coursework and training; 100 for webinars; and 100 for reviews.

  • When an AFC supervises your work in one-on-one counseling, teaching, or developing educational content, you can report 1.5 hours for every hour you work, whether it comes from clients, classes, or volunteering.

  • An independent third party verifies the hours with AFCPE's Experience Verification Form, and candidates can't verify their own hours.

  • With the 1.5 rate and several other categories, hours can add up faster than the three-year window suggests: I'm close to 960 hours after about a year.

I passed the AFC exam on September 18, 2026, and I'm still a candidate, because the certification also requires 1,000 experience hours. I expected that to take me at least three years. As of October 2026, about a year after I committed to becoming a personal finance coach, AFCPE has approved 554 of my hours, and I have about 403 more pending to be submitted. That puts me close to 960 of the 1,000.

1,000 hours can sound overwhelming for someone new to the field, a career changer, or someone doing this on top of a full-time job. I'm a solo practitioner developing my own coaching practice while working a full-time corporate job in a field outside finance, so this is the requirement I find most challenging.

Two things made it faster than I expected. The first is the 1.5 multiplier for hours supervised by an AFC. The second is that client coaching, the most direct way to earn hours, is not the only way, and the first clients can be hard to find. AFCPE approved hours for me from writing blog posts, creating educational materials, writing book reviews, teaching, and volunteering with approved organizations, which moved my total forward while I was building my practice. Over time, the larger share of hours may come from coaching and counseling.

This post covers the experience requirement only. The education, exam, ethics, and cost requirements are in AFC® Requirements: What It Takes to Become an Accredited Financial Counselor.

AFC Experience Hours: What Counts

AFCPE lists these areas: financial counseling, coaching, and education; personal financial planning and tax preparation; developing curriculum or educational materials; managing financial counselors or programs; and training, webinars, and coursework. Hours can count from 7 years before enrollment, and candidates have 3 years from enrollment to finish, a ten-year window in total. Experience can come before or after the exam, and passing the exam isn't required to log hours (AFCPE). AFCPE's Experience Guide details the categories.

Each category has a maximum number of hours, so the activities above can't cover all 1,000 hours:

Webinars, coursework and training, and reviews add up to at most 400 hours, so the rest has to come from the larger categories. AFCPE decides what counts, so check the guide before relying on an activity.

Ways to Earn Hours Beyond Client Coaching

  • Already working in the field: your current work may count. AFCPE's verification process covers paid employment, volunteer positions, self-employment, and pro bono work (AFCPE).

  • Teaching and creating content: classes, workshops, blog posts, and educational materials fall under teaching and developing educational content, which have high maximums in the table above.

  • Volunteering: AFCPE lists United Way, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, Community Action, Cooperative Extension offices, and VolunteerMatch as places to volunteer (AFCPE).

  • Pre-approved programs: structured opportunities whose hours AFCPE has already approved. Candidates can find them in the Experience Portal on their myAFCPE dashboard (AFCPE).

Pre-approved programs

AFCPE's Money Management Essentials course earns AFC candidates 10 experience hours.

Another example is The Externship, hosted by Amplified Planning. AFCPE lists it as pre-approved for 180 AFC experience hours in the Counseling & Coaching category. It is an 8-week program that is fully virtual and asynchronous, and it is offered once a year. The 2026 edition cost $447 and began June 1, 2026. Hours are submitted with the certificate of completion as supporting documentation.

The program I am doing is the Coaching Capability Experience Program. I am an AFCPE member, and I received the AFCPE member discount for it. I have no affiliate or paid arrangement for writing about it. I recommend the program. It is a great way to learn, build community with fellow professionals, and earn hours at the same time. It is pre-approved for AFC experience and has three parts: a workbook, triads, and presentations. It offers up to 250 hours, completed at your own pace, and some activities are eligible for the 1.5 rate (AFCPE listing). Hours are submitted in the Counseling & Coaching category with the Experience Verification Form. I started it in December 2025 and am still working through it.

The 1.5 Rate for AFC-Supervised Hours

Any hours you complete under the supervision of an AFC can be reported at 1.5 hours for every hour, in three categories: one-on-one counseling, teaching financial education classes or workshops, and developing educational content. The rate applies to the work itself, so it covers coaching clients, teaching, and creating educational content, whether the work is paid or volunteer. The only condition is that an AFC supervises it. Hours reported at 1.5 need an AFC as the supervisor and a signed Experience Verification Form. Women's Money Matters, a nonprofit, is one example: it says its volunteer presenting and coaching hours apply at that rate because volunteers work under AFCs.

How Hours Are Verified and Submitted

AFCPE's Experience Verification Form works like a professional reference. The verifier can be a supervisor, HR representative, or qualified peer or mentor, and must be an independent third party not related to you (AFCPE Experience Verification Form). Candidates can't verify their own hours, and verifiers also acknowledge the AFCPE Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics. For a self-employed candidate, the verifier can be someone knowledgeable about the candidate's practice. Line up the verifier early.

Hours are submitted through the myAFCPE dashboard, and AFCPE may audit submitted forms at random (AFCPE). Final certification also needs a professional information form documenting work experience and an employment verification form (AFCPE Candidate Handbook).

My Progress

By source, my 554 approved hours are, rounded to the nearest hour:

130

Book reviews

79

21

Reviewing proposals for the AFCPE Symposium

Total

554

Some of these hours were supervised by an AFC and reported with the 1.5 multiplier. I earned hours before and during my exam preparation, and the remaining hours are now the main focus.

I have about 403 more hours earned but not yet submitted. They include 186 client coaching hours, the hours I have partially earned toward the full 250 for Coaching Capability, and a few podcasts. I will submit all my client coaching hours as one bundle at the end of the year, and the Coaching Capability hours when I finish the program.

Summary

AFC experience hours come from several categories, and each has a maximum, so a mix of sources is needed. Hours supervised by an AFC can be reported at 1.5 hours per hour in three categories, and an independent verifier signs off on them. I have 554 of my 1,000 hours approved, and counting the hours I've earned but not yet submitted, I'm close to 960 after about a year. I'm doing it on top of a full-time job.

How does the 1.5 rate for supervised hours work?
