The Life Partner Choice: Your Most Important Financial Move

The most important financial decision you make in life isn’t an investment strategy, an account type, or even a career path.

It is the choice of your life partner.

I’m not talking about “marrying rich”, not at all. I’m talking about the qualities that person amplifies within you. Do they bring out your best or your worst? Do you actually vibe and align on lifestyle and financial choices? In the long run, it doesn't even matter whether you merge your assets or keep your accounts separate. That is secondary. What matters is the person behind the numbers and accounts. Are they encouraging and supportive, or diminishing and discouraging? Do you grow in this partnership, or do you stagnate?

As you consider your relationship, ask yourself:

  • Action: Do they make intentional choices, or are they reckless and spontaneous?

  • Spirit: Are they generous and thoughtful, or cheap and stingy?

  • Outlook: When they look at the world, do they see abundance and opportunity, or only scarcity and risk? Are they hopeful or pessimistic?

  • Support: Do they want you to succeed, or do they want success only for themselves? (Or perhaps they don't believe in success at all?)

  • Alignment & Values: Do they spend based on values - and more importantly, do your values align? Do they prioritize safety and comfort, or the outward expression of wealth?

  • Openness: Are they willing to talk about money, or is the subject avoided?

  • Horizon: Do they think about the future, or live only for today?

If you read this and think it’s impossible to align on every single thing, you are right. What you are looking for is alignment on your non-negotiables, paired with the ability to negotiate, find compromises, and create win-win scenarios for both of you.

The person you partner with will impact your financial life for decades - and potentially the lives of your children and the generations after them. That impact is far more profound than any specific investment choice you’ll ever make, any account you’ll open, or any tax optimization you’ll pursue.

Happy Belated Valentine’s Day! I’m not wishing for you to celebrate in any specific way, or to receive any particular gifts or flowers. Instead, I wish for you to do what makes your relationship with yourself - and your partner - truly meaningful and fulfilling to YOU, rather than what advertisements and social media tell you it should be.

If you resonate with this message and want to go deeper, there is an amazing podcast episode by Tori (founder of HerFirst100k) on this topic: 228. The Most Important Financial Decisions You’ll Ever Make (That NO ONE Talks About). I hope you find time to listen to it! I am going to re-listen it after I publish this post.
